Please use I2C RDY interrupt receive I2C data, then use I2C_readByte read=
data in your RDY=20
Interrupt service program.
I use this mode, I2C communication is OK

Did you look at the scope to see the clock? Is the clock distorted?
Did you try to run I2C in low clock rate?
